If you are a hardcore fan of independent horror films then the name Lauren Ashley Carter shouldn't be a stranger to you. As well as being a fan favourite amongst horror festival goes she manages to be the standout performance in Lucky McKee's The Woman, Chad Crawford Kinkle's Jugface (aka The Pit) and both Mickey Keating's POD and Darling (the latter of which earned her the title of 'Audrey Hepburn of Horror'). So as you can imagine it is a huge pleasure and honour to be able to create the artwork for one of her projects.
'Once Bitten...' is a short directed by Pete Tomkies and stars Garth Maunders and Lauren "Audrey Hepburn" Carter. As 'Once Bitten...' is a short we'd be in major spoiler territory if we divulged much more than the synopsis. "Martha needs the toilet fixed in her hotel bathroom but there' sone problem: her plumber may be a vampire".
The concept of the poster and DVD cover is an illustrative homage to 80s horror that will work as both a striking cover and a collectable poster.
In keeping the elements of the poster simple but dynamic our initial sketch was almost identical to the final design. Ashley would be the immediate focal point, the vampire over her shoulder secondarily but the bizarre use of a TV being an entertaining but questionable payoff resting just above the logo. Ashley's eyes and the vampires teeth constantly enticing you back up the image.
Unlike our usual process, because the image was to be so colourful and vibrant, once the design was finalised we created the artwork in black and white to ensure the contrast worked. it's very easy to lose the important details if you build up a brightly coloured image from scratch.
the final colours were overlayed onto the image and some final, sketch-style strokes were used to highlight the most important areas.
